Nanami/OS

Nanami/OS is a basic operating system based off of the WYOOS (Write Your Own Operating System) tutorial. It is still rather primitive, but I plan to further develop it. It features basic input/output, interrupts, a task manager, and will include a memory manager. Long-term plans include adding a shell, file systems, a package manager and potentially a desktop.

Source

Nanami/OS is based off of the Write Your Own Operating System tutorial, also known as WYOOS, and also incorporates other things such as a PIT driver. It is open-source and licensed under GNU General Public License 3.0. You can find the source on my GitHub here. On another topic, the OS is written mostly in object-oriented C++, with some assembly here and there.

I highly advise you download the files you need directly from GitHub, as the full repository contains source code of previous versions.

Features

Nanami/OS 0.21 features a keyboard driver, interrupts, PCI support, and a task manager. System calls and a memory manager are on the to-do list, and three planned updates, 0.22, 0.23, and 0.24 will incorporate file management/disk features, graphics support, and networking, respectively.

Questions you may be asking

~ Why is it called "Nanami/OS"? Nanami/OS is named after Nanami Madobe, a graduated anime girl representing Windows 7. Nanami had a semi-official status from 2009-2020, and I don't think it should be too much of a problem for Microsoft. The reason for her being the namesake is because she is one of my favorite anime characters and at the time of the project's creation in October 2023, a modified variant of Nanami represented the SteelsOfLiquid platform.

~ What influenced you to make this project? After seeing osakaOS, an OS with total dedication to the Azumanaga Dai-Oh character best known as "Osaka", for the first time, and then discovering the WYOOS tutorial, it gave me the idea to make an OS dedicated to Nanami Madobe. My initial plans were to develop and maintain a form of modified Windows 7 designed to be usable to this day, but I deemed that "too ambitious".

~ Why not just make a Nanami-themed Windows """edition"""? Grow up, small child. For one thing, I don't have the overall understanding of how people make those god awful Windows bootlegs, and for another, I want to be associated with quality, not rubbish.

~ What about Neisa, the character you use now? I have an idea for a separate project relating to her, that being a web browser.
